Over the past few weeks we posed the big question to our members – what was the best 3DS game released in 2013? And then, with remarkable speed, words of praise and nominations of games were placed upon our Facebook and Twitter by the wonderful UK Nintendo community, each one eager to extol the virtues of their chosen title.

Twelve different titles received votes, and – through the magic of point calculation – two games share the tenth spot, while another two wound up in ninth, meaning that we’re going to include all twelve in our list!

So without further distraction, here are the top twelve 3DS games released in 2013, as voted for by you, the players.

10 – Project X Zone/Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

9 – Harmoknight/Steamworld Dig

 

I’m really surprised HarmoKnight made the list. HarmoKnight is my all-time favourite game. It’s so cheerful and i play it a lot. I just seem to be addicted to it. It’s my 5th most played game ever, at around 400 hours total. Whenever i’m mad about something, or we get a tragic powercut, I’ll always play HarmoKnight, and it will always cheer me up. Every 3DS owner should at least try it. It may just be a small, downloadable game, but it means the world to me. – Kieran Powell via Facebook

Steam world dig, as it brings the magic of so many other games together in one bundle. You have the exploring of Terraria and Dig Dug. The fighting of Metriod and Castlevania. Then combine it with resource management of Minecraft. All together a great game, my favourite for the year. It’s got it all! – Lawrence Bowyer

8 – Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

 

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Dual Destinies! The return of our spiky-haired friend couldn’t have made a louder explosion (see what I did there, for those who’ve played the game..? Ehehe..) The great writing and in-depth plots are classic Ace Attorney! – Mark McAllister via Facebook

I’m going to choose Ace Attorney. i’m a huge fan of the series and frankly, I don’t think anyone saw it being localised for a moment then next thing you know, it was here. I was worried the game wouldn’t be the same after such a hiatus but it truly lived up to my expectations. 7 – Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

 

Monster Hunter is one of the most confusing games available, can be soul destroying when things go wrong and its controls are far from perfect. But it’s also a fantastic co-op game with oodles of things to do and find, loads of beautiful beasts to discover and learn about, so many ways to embellish play through tools and tricks and an incomparable sense of accomplishment when things go right. It might not be a flawless gem, but it’s still the one that shines brightest in my eyes. – James Bowden via Facebook

6 – Luigi’s Mansion 2

 

Luigi’s Mansion 2. I just admire the little touches. Luigi humming the theme tune, the snow crunching underfoot, the ghost that draws a smiley face in the condensation and the creak of each and every door. – Jack Whatley

5 – Bravely Default

 

Bravely Default is the only one I’m still playing, but I only got it for Christmas! So much fun, a great RPG; the art is fantastic, the characters are hilarious (Ringabel especially!). Absolutely brilliant, would recommend!! – Ruth Davis-Mourby via Facebook

4 – Fire Emblem: Awakening

 

As much as I love New leaf and A link between worlds, my vote goes to Fire Emblem Awakening. I downloaded it as my free game in the “too many games” promotion because i didn’t fancy anything else. I put off playing it, worried it would be over my head and too complex. How the team managed to strike the balance between being accessible to newcomers and retaining the challenge for loyal fans i don’t know but they did an amazing job. It’s done so everything is introduced bit by bit and you’re not only given a proper explanation but ample time to try the new move out. Add into the mix excellent stories, characters which are unique and fleshed out and building relationships to the point that should one die you mourn their death, you end up with this wonderful game. From a niche following to critical acclaim in one game is an amazing turn around, and the reason why it gets my vote for game of the year! – Lindsey Lawrence

2 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

 

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I had to give the top spot to this game, if only for the fact that it was the first Zelda game to really excite me since Wind Waker ten years ago. It was a perfect blend of nostalgic references to the excellent A Link to the Past, world-building content which firmly set this old Hyrule within the universe of the games that would follow and completely new content. The dungeons were very well designed and lacked the sluggish length that tended to come with the newer games, the new item rental system gave a true sense of a non-linear adventure and the characters really added a lot of new life to 1992’s iconic map of Hyrule. Also, the story had a level of depth beyond the usual good vs evil motifs, which is surprising for a Zelda game! – Alex Faulkner via Facebook

1 – Pokemon X & Y

 

Pokémon X & Y blow everything else away for me, so much so that it isn’t really even that close… There are a good three or four games I absolutely adored and it would have been a tough choice between them if Pokémon wasn’t released this year, but unlucky for those games it was, and it was outstanding. – Chris Barton via Facebook
