The nerve-racking final of MiiVision 2014 was held last weekend at the Summer Holiday in North Wales Event, and it was London, with their entry ‘Why London, Why’, that walked away victorious after the votes were counted.

After the videos were played to an enthralled crowd (with cheers, laughter and applause punctuating the Tomodachi recitals) the scores were announced one by one, group by group, with representatives from groups such as Liverpool, Manchester, Basildon, East Midlands and London being on hand to add a more united feeling to the presentation, alongside a wry smile when – in true Eurovision style – neighbours received high honours (leading to a few light hearted cheers and jeers from the crowd).

All of this amusing and spontaneous pomp led to an incredible climax in which one vote by StreetPass Portsmouth remained that would determine who would win the entire competition. Tension gripped the crowd until finally, when no nails remained to be bitten, and a few fingers has been mistakenly chomped, the winner was revealed as StreetPass London.

StreetPass UK caught up with the writer of StreetPass London’s winning entry, Derrin Jacques (also the number 1 StreetPasser in the UK, check the leaderboard) to find out a bit more about his entry.

“I’d written quite a few songs and I was struggling to choose which one to enter. Even though it was obviously intended to be amusing, I thought [Why London, Why] might end up being considered a bit offensive, I still think Jen [of StreetPass North Wales] might have actually thought it was!

Why did I think that? Well I was just thinking, ‘this song is kind of against the concept of this big StreetPass event that’s bringing these groups together, if I enter this am I going to get slaughtered?’ Haha! But then people voted for it so, yeah, it’s weird! Good, obviously, but weird.

I do wish more songs had thought ‘outside the box’, but it was a very fun competition so thank you to the organisers!”
